Why Most Clubs Overestimate Their Website

Every club manager knows their website. First-time visitors don’t.

A club’s website is often the first interaction a potential visitor has with the venue. Before they walk through the front doors, make a booking or attend an event, they’ve usually formed an opinion based on what they found online. Yet despite the importance of that first impression, many clubs unintentionally judge their websites from the wrong perspective.

The people who work within a club know the website intimately. They know where to find the restaurant menu, how to access function information, where membership details are located and which page lists upcoming entertainment. That familiarity makes the website feel intuitive. For someone visiting for the first time, however, the experience can be very different.

Every visitor arrives with a purpose. They might be planning a function, looking for today’s dining hours, checking whether live entertainment is on this weekend or trying to find out how to become a member. They’re not interested in exploring every page of the website. They’re simply looking for an answer that helps them decide what to do next.

This highlights a common challenge that psychologists refer to as the curse of knowledge. Once we understand how something works, it becomes remarkably difficult to remember what it was like not to. In the context of websites, it means the people maintaining them often overestimate how easy they are to navigate because they already know where everything is.

Modern browsing habits have only made this more important. Most visitors expect information to be available almost immediately, particularly when using a mobile phone. If they have to search through several menus, read lengthy pages or download PDF documents just to find basic information, many will simply move on. It’s rarely because the information isn’t there. More often, it’s because the website has been organised around the club’s internal structure rather than the visitor’s expectations.

The most effective club websites aren’t necessarily those with the latest design trends or the largest development budgets. They’re the websites that remove unnecessary effort. Information is easy to find, navigation feels natural and visitors are guided towards making an enquiry, booking a function or planning their next visit without having to think about where to click next.

One of the simplest ways to evaluate a website is to ask someone who has never visited your club before to complete a handful of common tasks. Ask them to find the function information, check what’s on this weekend or locate today’s dining hours. Resist the temptation to help. Simply observe how they interact with the site. Even small moments of hesitation often reveal opportunities to improve navigation, simplify content and create a better experience for future visitors.

Ultimately, the success of a club website isn’t measured by how easily staff can use it. It’s measured by how confidently a first-time visitor can find what they’re looking for. Seeing your website through fresh eyes can often reveal opportunities that have been hidden in plain sight for years.
